The famous Euphronios calyx krater depicts a rare Homeric scene; the death of Sarpedon, son of Zeus. He sided with the Trojans at the Trojan War and was eventually killed by Achilles’ closest companion, Patroclus.

At the centre of the scene Sarpedon’s dead body is lifted by Hypnos and Thanatos (Sleep and Death), Night’s twin sons. They are winged and came to Earth dressed like soldiers to carry the dead body away from the battlefield.
Hermes being a Psychopomp (guide of the souls) is watching at the centre.

The detailed painting and decoration on this krater has placed it amongst the finest masterpieces of the Ancient Greek Art.

The reverse side depicts soldiers preparing for battle.
